Abortion has been such a polarizing issue that neither side will admit that the other side might have a point. Pro-abortion people of good will ought to be able to say out loud that there are some instances when abortion is wrong. And anti-abortion people of good will should be able to admit that there might be times when an abortion is appropriate, and that such a decision should be made by the woman and her doctor. Pro-abortion mothers should ask themselves if they really want their under age daughter to be able to have an abortion without talking to her parents.
But I would hope that we can all agree that this is wrong. A young Florida woman went in for an abortion. She was prepped for the procedure but the doctor was late. She ended up going into labor and delivering the baby, which was 23 weeks old. One of the clinic's owners put the baby into a bag and threw her out. A later autopsy showed that the baby's lungs had filled with air, so she had been born alive.
Would she have lived? Perhaps not. Was it right to throw her away? No.

Today's News
Time Magazine Sinks To New Low bashing Sarah Palin. What's with these people? It's six weeks since the election. You won.
In the midst of a financial crisis, and after they hectored business CEOs to work for nothing, Congress gets a raise.
Evangelical minister Rick Warren chosen to give invocation at Obama inarguration. Gays and pro-choice groups angry. Well, actually, only the lefties that think everyone MUST agree with them are mad.
Gore: North Pole Will Disappear In 5 Years. (Apparently he has been saying this for a year already, but inexplicably still says 5 years.) In other news, snow is reported in the desert.
Obama cautions reporter not to waste his question by asking about Blogojovich. Reporter finally asks Obama about his jump shot.
Congratulations to our friend Mark who decamped from New York recently. He dodged 137 new taxes by doing so. Advice to Mark: don't move to California.

Could This Really Happen?
With the passage of the "Freedom of Choice Act" all barriers to abortion would be nullified, including informed consent and parental notification. In addition, the "freedom of conscience" protections would be invalidated. This is the legislation that allows Catholic hospitals in 46 states to opt out of preforming abortions.
What would be the result? According to an article in Slate, if Catholic hospitals continued to refuse to perform abortions, they would lose federal funding, without which they could not function. Catholic bishops have made it clear that the Catholic Church would rather close their hospitals (which account for 1/3 of all hospitals) than be made to go against the doctrines of their religion.
There's an interesting conundrum here: Barack Obama was able to have it both ways during the election campaign. He presented himself as anti-abortion, enabling Catholics to vote for him in good conscience. But he also said his first act as President would be to sign FOCA into law if it passed the congress.
Could the American health care system survive the closing of a third of its hospitals? Not likely. I think Obama had better hope that FOCA cannot find enough congressional support to pass.
